Flightless Fruit Flies | Buy Live Cultures

Live fruit flies are a great option for feeding small lizards and many species of frogs, especially because of their reproduction cycle. Each culture of flightless fruit flies has a lifespan of about one month, and even after they die they will continually pupate from eggs laid by the adults in the culture! This will allow you to keep fruit flies for a while, as long as they are taken care of accurately. Regular fruit flies should be kept at 70 - 75 degrees and giant fruit flies should be kept at 78 - 83 degrees. If the culture is not stored at an appropriate temperature, it could possibly mold. The flies have everything they need inside of the container they are shipped in; just feed to your animal as needed! Buy flightless fruit flies from us today!

We advise that the customer should never remove all of the fruit flies from the Fruit Fly Culture, a few should be left in the vial for breeders. This will increase the lifespan of the vial and result in the need to buy fruit flies less often.

  • Each Live Flightless Fruit Fly Culture contains 40-50 medium adult flies.
  • Cultures should be stored at room temperature and kept out of direct sunlight.
Regular fruit flies (Drosophila melanogaster) are about 1/16"
Giant fruit flies (Drosphila hydei) are about 1/8"

FEEDING INSTRUCTIONS:

Gently tap the top of the culture to knock the fruit flies to the bottom. Remove cover and shake out the desired amount. It is recommended that you dust your flies with a vitamin supplement such as Fluker's Repta-Calcium or Fluker's Repta-Vitamin prior to feeding them to your pet.

Which shipping method should I choose? We offer a wide variety of options for shipping your live insects. Using the chart above as reference, our customers can choose which shipping service will work best for them. It is important to take into account that transit times vary greatly between the different options. USPS First Class Mail can take up to 7 business days and Fedex Overnight is a one business day in transit service. What works well for some customers will not always work well for others. If it is during the hot summer months or cold winter months we recommend not using USPS First Class Mail because it is the slowest option and increases the risk of receiving your insects DOA. Make sure to check the weather, carefully taking into account transit time and places that your package will travel through. Also important to consider is the price between the shipping methods: USPS First Class Mail is the cheapest, Fedex Priority Overnight is the most expensive with many options in between. We try to provide as much information as possible but it is ultimately up to the customer to make the best choice based on weather and the quality of delivery services available to your area.

  • Advise - please provide a valid physical address for shipping via FedEx. FedEx will not deliver to a P.O. Box. Orders shipping to a P.O. Box will need to be shipped USPS.

Live Delivery Guarantee Winter

Fluker Farms guarantees live delivery when temperatures are as low as 16 degrees at the destination and/or regional sort facilities. While most fruit fly growers simply refuse to ship at temperatures below this threshold, Fluker Farms recognizes how much you rely on live insect for your pet’s nourishment and feel you should have a choice in the matter. Therefore, we provide the following options when the weather drops to 0-15 degrees (we will not ship to any areas below 0 degrees).

1) Ship Without Guarantee (SWG)-You can choose to have your fruit flies shipped when the night time temperatures are between 0-15 degrees by selecting the SWG option, however, we cannot guarantee live delivery and NO REFUND will be given for insects that do not arrive alive.

2) Hold For Weather (HFW)-If you choose the HFW option, your order may be held up to 7 days while we wait on improved shipping conditions. If after 7 days the weather doesn’t improve enough for your order to be shipped, it will be cancelled and any charges refunded.

For your convenience we offer a variety of shipping methods. Please choose the method that is best suited for the conditions in your area. Keep in mind that although Fluker Farms will replace any crickets that do not arrive alive (subject to the extreme weather policy outlined above), Fluker Farms DOES NOT guarantee any shipping charges. All shipping charges are final and non refundable. Please inspect your packages upon delivery and contact us immediately with any problems. All live insect claims must be made within 2 business days of delivery. To request a claim, please fill out our credit request form. All claims will be processed within 2 business days.

    Fruit fly culture

Posted by Marlaina Junior on Jun 21st 2019

This is an update on my previous review, which, unfortunately, for some reason, was never posted.
So, even though all the flies died within 6 days of receiving the culture, some of the larvae have hatched and I have a nice new supply of flies. And there are more 'babies' waiting to be born. I updated my rating to 5 stars because of this. No, it's not a big vial. If you need to feed these flies in abundance, you need a bigger culture. But I have to say, I am quite pleased that I have a continuous supply for my nymph mantises.
Do not throw the culture away when the flies die. If you look at the sides of the vial, you will see tiny, white oval shaped 'eggs'. In a couple of days they will turn black and then hatch in about 4 days.

    Flightless Fruit Flies

Posted by Marlaina Junior on Jun 19th 2019

I received the fruit fly culture on June 10, 2019 with directions for their care. There were plenty of flies in it. I followed the directions carefully. I fed my nymph mantises that day. The next day I noticed that many flies were dead. On the third day, I fed the mantises again but there were many more dead flies in the culture. By June 16, all the flies were dead. I kept the culture, because it looks as though there are larvae on the sides of the vial and some are actually moving. But, I did order more live flies from another company because I have to feed my nymphs and I can't wait for these larvae to hatch.
I'll post again if/when the larvae hatch.

    Bad Instructions

Posted by Felix DuCharme on Aug 4th 2018

Arrived with many dead on bottom, but many still alive so that was okay. In instructions, it says that no care is required, but as my first culture I didn't know that the food on the bottom became a solid and it needed humidity. All died in 2 days, big waste... no reply from support..

    fruit fly culture

Absolutely the worst online purchase of a fruit fly culture. You expect to receive what is available in pet stores a large jar of flies, but what you get is a small vial and when I say small I mean one inch by two inch in size with about 10 love flies which died in two days and nothing else has produced at all. I had 40 baby chameleons to feed. Don’t waste money.

    Hydei fruit flies

Posted by Katheryn Currey on Jun 27th 2018

I think I expected the same cultures you find in the pet store but what I received was a small vial of about 20 flies. When I say small I mean a one inch wide by 2 1/2 tall. Says it produces 500 flies. I am trying to feed multiple chameleons so this was a waste of money. Disappointed.

    Most arrived dead

Posted by Tiffany on Jul 12th 2017

I was outside when the mailman dropped off the package, and opened it immediately when I got inside. Not only are these flies EXTREMELY tiny, but most of them are dead. Not impressed.
